Hold doctors responsible for medical mistakes: MP; Al-Tabtabaei questions health minister KUWAIT CITY: Kuwait’s Health Minister Sheikh Ahmed Al-Abdullah Al-Sabah must explain whether the truth behind Assistant Undersecretary for Drug and Food Control Dr Essah Al-Khalifa’s recent statement that some local traders are mixing cortisone with honey has been investigated, says MP Dr Waleed Al-Tabtabaei. How many such cases have been identified by the Health Ministry and what measures have been taken on this issue? he asked. The MP also wanted to know whether any citation has been issued to the persons involved in this violation and whether the ministry has referred anybody to the Public Prosecution over this issue. Referring to various committees in government hospitals such as the Records Committee, Death and Complications Committee and Pollution and Infection Prevention Committee, Al-Tabtabaei asked whether such committees serve any useful purpose and submit periodic reports to the Director of the concerned hospital. Do directors of government hospitals follow up death of patients due to medical mistakes or negligence? he asked. Wanting to know the role of the Health Ministry in investigating such death cases, the MP asked Sheikh Ahmad Abdullah to explain whether doctors who commit medical mistakes are being held responsible for their action and whether the Health Ministry has imposed any punishment on such doctors? Indicating according to Article 26 of Civil Service Law No.15/1979 government employees should refrain from conducting any business, industrial or professional activity, Al-Tabtabaei said “as top-level officials directors of government hospitals should not involve in any business activity, especially if it is related to their work.” Continuing with his questions, the MP asked does the director of Psychiatric Hospital or any of his teenage sons own a health center which sells medical equipment. If yes, what is the stand of the ministry on this issue which is against the law? Claiming a Kuwaiti professor at the Faculty of Medicine had referred two women affected with tuberculosis to Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital, the MP said “according to the rules of the Health Ministry persons with such diseases should be sent to the Al-Rashed Allergy Center, which is meant to treat patients who suffer from communicable diseases.” Has the ministry identified the doctor who committed this violation and has the minister or the Undersecretary of Heath ordered any investigation of this issue, he asked Demanding the list of doctors who have been found to have committed such violation, Al-Tabtabaei asked whether the Health Ministry has taken any steps to prevent the recurrence of such mistakes and protect patients and employees of Mubarak Al-Kabeer Hospital from infectious diseases.
