Geese blamed for Lake Tahoe pollution

Officials are looking to capture some of Lake Tahoe's biggest polluters: Canada geese.

A sewage spill at the lake last summer "is nothing compared to what's happening with these geese," said Jack Spencer, a federal Department of Agriculture wildlife biologist.

Spencer said the bottom of Lake Tahoe is covered by up to two inches of goose feces in some areas. A 10-pound Canada goose can produce four pounds of nitrate- and phosphate-rich feces every day it waddles across the beaches, lawns and golf courses of Tahoe.

The birds find refuge on Tahoe, one of the most protected lakes in the nation, when they molt their primary wing feathers in the spring and can't fly.

Spencer and other biologists from USDA Wildlife Services hope to trap up to 400 Canada geese at several Tahoe locations this week, at the request of property owners and managers.

"We only work where we are wanted, where there is damage occuring," Spencer said.

The geese will be innoculated for disease and released to a wildlife management area in eastern Nevada. About 1 percent of juveniles may return, and about 15 percent of adults will return.

The birds are protected by the Federal Migratory Bird Act, but can be hunted. In recent years, rules have loosened to help urban areas deal with the birds.

The Tahoe roundup is part of a regionwide effort. The geese also pose a threat to jets flying in and out of the Reno Airport, Spencer said.

Canada geese have stopped migrating in a triangle that includes Tahoe, Reno and Carson City. Abundant food sources from turf landscaping has resulted in increased densities within that triangle.

"I guarantee you, in the old days, Lake Tahoe was just a stopover place," Spencer said.

Fifteen agencies are involved in the roundup, including the Humane Society, which will provide food for the captured birds.

im looking at it on google maps....i remember what the northwest was like (i was in 2nd grade when i was there and the ferns in the forest were bigger than me). there are a LOT of islands out there in the sound.....that must be awesome paddling area.....especially if you go up the rivers. the rivers are fairly calm there arent they?

imagine paddling right next to some humpback whales or some orcas.

OK, Nyar, you want to paddle amongst the orcas and seals. Calm, saltwater, rocky shores with much to explore. We have so much of that here it's ridiculous. Where I live there's none of that but just a 30 minute drive up northwest Vancouver and there it begins. Lots of seals. Beautiful.

We should start feeding them terrorists.

when i was a kid we would park along the highway at a trailhead and hike up over the mountain and down the backside until we got to the coast....then meandered through a maze of driftlogs until we got to the beach. lots of tidal pools with starfish, urchins and all sorts of shellfish. it was amazing. i remember a huge tree falling across the path and the center was rotted out and covered with moss and ferns....looked like a cave to me. i remember coming across a tent with a couple backpacks and gear sitting there and i ran up and yelled to my parents "look at all this stuff someone just left here!". LOL...my mom snapped at me LEAVE IT ALONE. when the tide came in i was out on the rocks playing in the tidal pools and these HUGE waves come crashing in and i got soaked. i think we saw one other person the whole time we were out there......its paradise compared to suburbia america.

now dont get me wrong.....big cities like NYC are fun too.

yeah, ive read a lot of people say paddling the northwest coastline is a lot more scenic than east.

Some are predicting polar bear extinction soon. I don't by it though, bears can swim a 1000 miles so melting ice haven't hurt them yet, I don't think.

All this global warming stuff is real but they need to stop blaming business for it. 12000 years Canada was an entire sheet of ice. No business existed back. Global warming is a natural event, not a man made one.
