There was a problem with the image-verification security system we were using to try to block spammers from reg'ing....so nobody was able to register. I have disabled the option, which will let the occasional spammer through until it can be fixed....but should open the floodgates as far as new registration.

Since I've seen 3-10X as many Guests as Members lately, hopefully this will improve matters considerably!

I've fixed guest posting for the time being too. But of course we will have to be watchful for spammers; forum spammers are on the rise.

I would love to get it working. I've been searching for information on why this might be broken but thus far no dice. Any help on this from anyone would be appreciated (perhaps some of the new members we are going to be bringing in over the next few weeks will have a little more technical experience than the current crowd, or one of the current Xerces members who hasn't been able to spend much time on TBH yet will be able to illuminate me).....but if left to my own devices I'm sure I'll nail it down before too long.*

I am about to make the necessary system level support changes (probably install a Mac OS X compatible version of the "GD" image library that vBulletin can use, as one of the options to draw its high-complexity verification images) that will enable the feature to be reset.

However, I have recent learned with the experience of running some phpBB2 boards that use image verification.....spammers still get through. The rate is lowered, but not as dramatically as you might think. We will definitely still need to keep an eye on things, because we are obviously in one of the common databases for powerful BBS mass-spamming software. The good news is that actually drives some legitimate traffic because it tends to bring regular users following the spammers' trails, and also the same databases that spammers use are integral to a range of paths that legitimate users take to finding new sites.

In any case, I'll get right on it and should have a solution within the week, at the outside. You guys have been doing great front-line antispammer work for us all lately, and I want to do anything I can to help you/reduce yr. workloads
