Reform must give access to care to all
Eagle Tribune Publishing Company. North Andover, MA To the editor: The information on health care reform is being so skewed by those afraid of change, and for some reason the media is allowing this to happen. Health care — health insurance — reform is being done so that all people will have access to health care. It will make Medicare better, it will make it so we are not penalized at any time for pre-existing conditions. I am over 50 years old. After 50 it is next to impossible to purchase decent health insurance because the rates skyrocket. This needs to change. All elders should have access to the same health benefits, not just those who can afford high-cost insurance in excess of Medicare. We need to make sure that our representatives in Congress understand that in this law to be passed we want access to the same health care for all, without regard to income, without regard to pre-existing health issues. And we want coverage for alternative care, not just nursing home care. I want my doctor to continue caring for me, I don't want to be thrown in a nursing home if I cannot live on my own. There are alternative care models out there now. They need to be part of the system. Nurses should be paid to come to your home setting five days a week if you need it, not just two because that is all that Medicare allows. Your doctor should be paid for all the time he spends in advising you of alternative for end of life choices. I want to make this decision, not have a nursing home staff make it for me. I want my doctor available and paid to be available. We need to get this health care reform passed. Tell your congressperson what you see and what you think you will need. Get it done. What needs to be changed, can be changed in the future, but we as a society need to smarten up and look to the future, our own futures, and those of our loved ones, and our neighbors.

What that women said in the movie clip was not lunacy and she put forward a reasonable inquiry. Shutting people up by calling it revenge when there are inquiries is not going to work for the Liberalism, the Libs need to answer the inquiries.

I think the vast majority of conservatives want health reform. They only have reasonable differences over what form it should take, and government's proper role(s) in it -- as well as what is fiscally responsible or likely to be effective for it to do.
As ever, unrealistic pie-in-the-sky fringes on either end of the debate are being given too much rope by their far more effective counterparts in the center. Libertarian or Progressive, matters far less than *being willing to get the most good done for the most people, particularly those most in need*. It's called compromise, people. Sometimes you need to stand up for what you believe in....but there are plenty of other times when you'll be much better off by sitting down, shutting the frak up, and listening to your "opponents" so that something can get fucking *done*.

I look forward to the President laying out a much more specific proposal, drafting a new bill, and deliberately pissing off the Left so that he can show the Right he's for real when it comes to making this work for *everyone* during his speech before the Joint Session of Congress.
It will be imperfect, no matter what; but there is an opportunity here to tack this foundering ship back into the wind and get reform back on course. And also to show us whether or not he is really willing to make good on his lofty rhetoric of a "new bipartisanship" from the campaign days. If he can really convince Republican Senator Olympia Snowe of my home state, who I'm not exactly a huge fan of but respect in relative terms nonetheless for the highly independent/bipartisan role she often plays, to sign onto this new bill or at least champion its journey through further negotiations and vote-gathering.....then I think that is a very good sign. Maine has always been among the foremost states on health issues.

Concerning health care reform, Ted Kennedy admitted that looking back he made a mistake by turning down Nixon's proposal when Nixon was president. That makes me wonder if Kennedy would in fact take the public option off the table for now, if he were alive and still in congress. I hear that Switzerland has an all insurance system that's highly regulated. Maybe that's what Obama will propose.
It's too bad that Pelosi is dragging the house to the far left. I would like to see a more moderate Speaker of the House. Her position on healthcare reform is become obstructionist IMO.
