Check it out: http://tor.eff.org/

It's a system that breaks up your HTTP/HTTPS traffic into chunks too small to make any real sense by themselves, and then routes them through a network of distributed Tor proxies.

Not even the proxy servers themselves can tell where the traffic is from or where it's going, and the system uses multi-point bounce routing (which is slow, but very secure)....the same technique serious "hackers" use to cover their tracks.

It definitely won't speed up your web browsing so I wouldn't necessarily use it full time on your primary computer but when you need anonymity....this is definitely the way to go.

Reliable, resource-efficient install packages are available for almost every platform out there. I've been playing with it for a while (I'm Tor-surfing right now in fact) and it really does what it says....even government agencies with tons of SIGINT equipment will have trouble getting anything useful out of your TOR traffic.

didn't DARPA contribute to this project? strange that the EFF would promote something that must have a weak spot for tracking terrorists, right?

Damn good question! I'm curious about that myself. All I know is that it's secure, efficient, and does no *harm* to my security. It only adds a layer of obfuscation which is what the game is all about....I certainly don't depend on *just* Tor. It's merely another weapon in my arsenal :devilish:
