View Full Version : Right to Know vs Treason

Where is the line drawn between the people's right to know and treason? Why is it so difficult for the media to use common sense in deciding whether a particular story is going to cause more harm then good? The latest report concerns Saddam Hussein and his attorney. The media allows him to send a message to the people of Iraq encouraging more violence and mayhem in an already volatile situation. It seems that every news outlet is guilty of aiding and abetting the enemy in their pursuit of keeping the people informed, including Foxnews.
During WWII, reporters would have never considered reporting anything that might remotely affect the safety of the soldiers or bring encouragement to the enemy. What has changed? Why do we only hear of all the negative things in Irag? There are many positive events happening that far outweigh the negatives.
If anyone believes that the media doesn't influence feelings and opinions, they're naive. The only thing I can figure is that the media as a whole wants America to lose in Iraq to prove that their liberal agenda was proven right.
I'm not saying that the decision to go to war was right. I remember being angry because we didn't give th U.N. inspectors one more chance, but leaving that behind, when the war started I felt that was the time to get behind the decision because that was the best thing for the country.
I agree that according to the First Ammendment that the we have a free press, however that doesn't excuse them from being irresponsible in their reporting.
I also realize that society has changed since WWII, but the right of the freedom of the press shouldn't mean discarding ethics and accountability.
Also, I am speaking about the media in the United States. It's one thing for the press in other nations to report things that might be encouraging to the "enemy", but it's quite a different thing to report things that are damaging to your own country, and shouldn't be about competing with other press agencies abroad or domestic. :?:

"This is not about liberal vs. conservative."

That's an excellent question and one that's increasingly difficult to answer. But I think there is no longer a line there, given the fact that newspapers are now a for profit business. And with the addition of the internet, media outlets are obsessed with winning the race for beating the other papers to print. Beating them to print means more money in the long run. When media outlets ceased operating in the red, the game changed

It's all about money now for those large media outlets (your smaller media doesn't have the capabilities to accomplish this)

I think Saddam's name should be on the ballot this January.

I think Saddam should've agreed to go into exile before the war began with the assurance that his name would be on the ballot.

Welcome to the Hole, Franco.

Saddam ran a tight ship and kept things in order. Uncle Sam is making a mess out of Iraq, and America.

Exit, you can do better than that. You can't tell me that you think things are going good in Iraq. Bush fvcked it up good. You'll be there forever. This election is a joke too. A war is going on and Bush is holding an election. A suicide mission for the voters. Bush is a RETARD.

It's true that this is often a difficult compromise to make....

but isn't the true american ideal to always strive for maximum liberty and transparency in govt?

America just ran an election filled with fraud. Do you see the America media covering it..?

Nope.

But the Ukraine election is all over American TV and paperboy newspapers.

Weird don't you think..?

Get your buddies and take it to the street. Protest. Look what the people of Ukraine did. Another election is being held there on Dec. 26. American's have gone soft. Kerry's inactions don't help much either.

I will always remember Stormin Norman telling us what the troops were doing in their exact locations on CNN during the Gulf War. It was ridiculous!

Everybody freaked out on Geraldo Rivera for doing something vaguely like that but not half as dangerous to our troops. Strange that so many people have forgotten that incident  :?

I agree. I mean, what is the point in having a strategy to catch someone, if you're giving away all the secrets? Not to mention, the danger the media is in as well for being foolish enough to want top scoops. Of course, many of us watched it, too (guilty as charged).
