The California state senate passed on Thursday a bill aimed at recovering lost sales tax revenue from online retailers like Amazon and Overstock. The bill is expected to pass the assembly as well. However, Governor Schwarzenegger vetoed a similar bill last year after Overstock threatened to cancel contracts with affiliates in the state.
The bill is intended to help balance the states $20 billion dollar budget deficit, and is projected to recover $120 million per year in revenue from online retailers who don’t currently collect sales tax from customers in California. Under current state law, customers of companies like Amazon are required to pay sales tax for purchased goods, however there is no way for the state to track purchases to collect the money, because the state cannot require Amazon to collect the taxes for them.

At this point, as much as I enjoy the truly free market that the Internet is ideally supposed to represent, it seems like all commerce within a state or nation should be handled on an equal basis regardless of whether it's online or offline....

It's not more taxes, you're already required to pay sales tax on anything you buy, but because the seller isn't inside the state, the state government can't force them to collect sales tax for them, so it never gets collected.
Honestly i'm more willing to pay sales tax than income tax, the former can regulate itself (people stop buying things if the tax gets too high), the latter lets the government ride on the back of successes in private industry while throwing money into a pile to waste later on.

The cost of providing things like roads and the military doesn't go up just because someone makes $60,000 instead of $30,000 in a years time, so making taxation variable on that basis is absurd, and is the single greatest enabler of government waste and abused.
