Solar firms absorb installation costs, charge for electricityMarketWatch
1:51 p.m. 04/02/2008 By Steve GelsiMore hopefuls opting to absorb expenses themselves, charge for powerNEW YORK (MarketWatch) -- California developer John DeWalt had yet to build a project with solar panels, until now."Solar's just been too expensive," DeWalt said in a phone interview. "But now the market is getting more attuned to green building and solar is slowly but surely becoming more available. The cost is slowly coming down."DeWalt plans to go solar for the first time in his Pacific Station project -- 47 residential units and about 50,000 square feet of commercial and office space located about two blocks from the beach in Encinitas, Calif., just north of San Diego.Under a new type of financing growing in popularity in the solar business, Open Energy Corp., a Solana Beach, Calif., renewable energy company, will build 30 solar membranes with a capacity of 1.5 million kilowatt hours at no direct cost to DeWalt.Instead, Open Energy will arrange financing of $480,000 to pay for installation of 1.2- kilowatt systems for each of the 47 condominium town homes at Pacific Station in exchange for the right to sell power to residents. When tax incentives and other credits are figured in, DeWalt said, the solar panels will improve property values and trim monthly utility bills with no upfront costs to the homeowner.David Saltman, chief executive of Open Energy (OEGY), said financial firms have been partnering with his company to pay for the solar panels in exchange for a California rebate for 25% of the cost, plus federal investment-tax credits of 30%. The incentives allow for an internal rate of return of 8% to 9% on the money invested and a payback period of about 6 1/2 years, he said.Saltman said the company hopes to continue teaming up in similar partnerships as it eyes the residential and commercial markets for solar and branches out into the business of selling power.Open Energy's program marks the latest in a trend of absorbing costs up front.Sun Run in San Francisco specializes in systems for individual homes. On the East Coast, Beltsville, Md.-based SunEdison focuses on larger commercial projects.Tom Rainwater, SunEdison's CEO, said in an exchange of emails that the company led the industry with its solar power services agreements, first launched in 2004 with a store run by Whole Foods Markets (WFMI) in Edgewater, N.J."We formed SunEdison on the premise of simplifying solar by offering a financial vehicle to implement solar energy on a broad scale for commercial, government and utility customers," Rainwater said. "When we see companies like Open Energy using our model, in this case for mixed-use residential, it reinforces the power and scalability of the model for making solar photovoltaics part of the total distributed energy mix."Elsewhere in the solar industry, a pair of California-based utilities have been playing up their investments:
